Florida Airboat Rules, Registration and Licensing

Airboats are vessels under Florida law, plus a set of rules that apply to them alone. This page explains the shape of it; the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission publishes the current text and is the authority.

Registration

Motorised vessels used on Florida waters must be registered and display valid numbers and a decal. Registration is handled through the county tax collector. Titling requirements apply to most vessels, and a home-built airboat has its own paperwork path — expect to document the hull and the engine.

Operator requirements

Florida requires a boating safety education identification card for operators born on or after 1 January 1988, obtained by passing an approved course. Carry it along with photo identification. Age restrictions apply to who may operate a vessel of a given power.

Airboat-specific rules

Florida law imposes requirements specific to airboats, including a muffling or noise-abatement requirement and a mast-mounted flag so the boat is visible above vegetation. Requirements have been amended over the years, and enforcement is active in this part of the state. Read the current statute rather than relying on what was true when someone learned to run.

Required equipment

  • A wearable flotation device for every person aboard, of the correct size.
  • A sound-producing device.
  • Navigation lights if you run between sunset and sunrise.
  • A fire extinguisher appropriate to the installation.
  • Visual distress signals where required by the water you are on.

Where to confirm

The FWC boating section publishes the current regulations, required equipment and zone maps. County ordinances can add restrictions on particular water. When the two differ, the stricter one is the one that will be enforced on you.
